POBOLEDA

THE PASANAU
FAMILY
Throughout the Pasanau family’s centuries of history, there is an unmistakable commitment to the land of El Priorat. Settled in the town of Poboleda, the Pasanaus continued to work the family land until the end of the 19th century, when the devastating phylloxera plague swept through El Priorat and its wine industry.

In 1940, the great-grandfather of the current generation, Joan Pasanau Garcia, a man of remarkable vision and determination, became head of the family and began replanting the land with new vines. His pioneering spirit and deep love for the land are still evident in the old cabernet sauvignon vines of the La Planeta estate, the first to be planted within the DOQ Priorat, in 1984.
During the 1980s, the fourth generation of the Pasanau family – the brothers Joan, Albert and Ricard – took over the vineyards and acquired other estates, introducing new varieties and new cultivation systems. In 1995, following grandfather Joan Pasanau Estrems’ way towards his dreams, the three brothers built the current winery in the village of La Morera de Montsant, at the foot of the Serra del Montsant range.

In 2001, Wine Spectator ranked the 1997 wine from La Planeta estate at number 58 in the world, a recognition of the effort of five generations of Pasanaus who blazed a trail between dizzying slopes and llicorella slate ridges in pursuit of a dream.
In 2020, Jordi Pasanau set off on the path laid out by his uncles and his father with the strength of a fifth generation, making a firm commitment to the quality and local character of some unique wines.
